Perspectives on Tourism

Global tourism is one of 20th- and 21st-century’s most spectacular tales of growth: After a modest restart in the 1950’s, the number of tourist arrivals worldwide has risen ever faster to astonishing figures. In 2019, 1,5 billion tourists were registered.
By now, this is history. But what made and what makes tourism so particular as a service industry? From the beginning, it was based on artificial worlds and the production and circulation of images. Valentin Groebner invites us to take a fresh look.
