We’re too young to run in circles

Monika Jia Rui Scherer

Gays are active in representing the theme of homosexuality in the media. Bisexuality, the emotional and/or sexual attraction to more than one gender, however, is hardly addressed in the media at all, nor is asexuality, the lack of sexual attraction.

Monika Jia Rui Scherer attributes her own late coming out to a delayed self-perception. On the one hand, she seemed to fit in the heterosexual mold, on the other she had trouble identifying with the enactments of the lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/queer (LGBTQ) movement. Her own queer sides probably also remained repressed because of the lack of visibility of other sexual orientations.

Scherer explores a representation of sexuality beyond the two poles of homo- and heterosexuality. Her work aims at showing an alternative and steering away from the binary social constructions of friendship and romance, sexuality and asexuality, straight and gay. She looks for ways to raise public awareness about bisexuality and asexuality and to more openly address these themes in the media.
