Unexposed

Kilian Bannwart

The night is no more the privileged realm of darkness. Artificial lighting in the urban environments of the 24/7 global economy extends daytime beyond its natural borders dictated by the cycle of the sun, and the dark sky is increasingly becoming brighter. This phenomenon has ecological, physical, and social consequences such as changes in animal and human behaviours, besides the pressure to subscribe to an economic-oriented society that never takes a break.

In “Unexposed”, Kilian Bannwart investigates how photographic-visual media can be applied to capture and represent darkness, with the intention of sensitising the sociological and psychological dimension of the decreasing darkness of the night.
In the gloomy hours he visited places that people usually avoid during night time to experience and register natural darkness and the remains of the light in a series of video/photographic experiments using various devices – “seeing machines”, together with a full documentation of the experiments.
